Taking the path less tread sex workers become role models

With pride in her eyes and a smile that emits dignity, Rashmi gleefully accepts the 20 rupees note that her customer hands it over to her in exchange for the candles that she made by herself and sold. Eight months prior, Rashmi had a different story to tell. Every day for nine years Rashmi, in her own words, walked the “path of shame." Rashmi was a sex worker then.

Recalling her story, Rashmi says “My dad was an alcoholic who died when I was six years old. My mother had no clue how she would feed me and my two little brothers. We live in a small town where income generation for women was zero. Having no alternative, mom forced herself into prostitution. I have seen my mom doing that for years and before I could realise, I was walking the same path. However, every day I felt as if the society, my neighbours, my relatives are scorning me for my profession and I desperately wanted a way out.”

Opportunity knocked at Rashmi’s door, when a local NGO, Aids Prevention Society (APS)helped Rashmi to carve out an alternative livelihood and lead a “life of dignity.” Rashmi is an entrepreneur now who makes candles and pottery and sells it in the local market.

Rashmi is not an isolated example. Like Rashmi, there are hundreds of sex workers who belong to a small town, Betkuchi, in the eastern part of India. The town is notoriously known as the ‘red light area’ where they "churn out prostitutes". The main livelihood in Betkuchi till a couple of years back was prostitution. Thanks to Aids Prevention Society, things are beginning to change now. Over 50 percent of the sex workers in Betkuchi in the last two years have left the profession and looking towards a healthier and “respectable” livelihood. These sex workers, under the guidance of APS, have formed self-help groups named Sakhi (a friend) which enables them to be self-reliant by engaging in income-generating activities.

Project Sakhi trains these sex workers in various ways to carve out a self-reliant livelihood. Dr. Asif Ahmed, Director of APS and project head of Sakhi says, " Betkuchi is a renowned red light area and the living conditions of these women are pathetic. Sakhi was envisaged to bring about a change both economically as well as socially for these sex workers. We wanted to do something for their upliftment and give them a better life.”

Adding further, Dr. Ahmed adds. “Most of these women have taken up prostitution not by choice but as a forced occupation. These workers had very low self-esteem and well-being was a remote dream in their minds. But we knew that we have to bring them to the mainstream and make a change for them," the director added.

So how did Sakhi help these sex workers? The NGO initially started educating these sex workers on how important their health is for their profession and personal hygiene. Gradually, it started asking these workers to come to the health centers and counseled them. The NGO thereafter created cadres of peer educators from these sex workers, especially to highlight why health-seeking and treatment of illness at an early stage is so very important for them for the prevention of HIV.

The NGO helped these workers in learning basic vocational skills like designing candles, making detergent powder, pottery and making file covers. The NGO would divide these workers into three groups. There are about 150 women with fifty members in each group. After the final product is ready, these women go to the local markets and sell them.

Talking about their achievement, Munni, (name changed), an erstwhile sex worker says. “Prostitution gave me a daily wage of about over Rs 800 to Rs 1000. Now I make a profit of Rs 1200 per day by selling candles and detergent, What more can I ask for? I have the fulfillment of being a “dignified labour”.

Priyanka, ( named changed) another ex-sex worker says, "I am happy to come here. We are making candles, detergent powders and file covers. We are learning a lot here and earning through a respectable job. I am now earning more than what I used to and I am doing that with dignity and great pride. Our town is no more scorned. Our women have made a significant change from what they were previously known. They are now budding entrepreneurs." Priyanka adds with a smile.

According to Dr. Ahmed, the transformation journey wasn’t an easy one. Recalls the director, “Most of the sex workers were not ready to come out and accept the change. Besides having very low self-esteem, the health of these sex workers was deteriorating. We needed a way out and that is how we came up with Project Sakhi.” The NGO initially started educating these sex workers on how important their health is to their profession. Gradually, it started asking these workers to come to the health centers. Then the NGO created cadres of peer educators from these sex workers, especially to highlight why health seeking and treatment of illness at an early stage is so very important for them for the prevention of HIV. “Once they realised the importance of their well-being, we eventually “talked them” into carving out profession which benefits not just these women but the entire town of Betkuchi.”

Betkuchi now boasts of an income much higher than what had ever seen. Thanks to Project Sakhi, Betkuchi now is not just a self-reliant town but a healthier place and a living example for many small towns and hamlets who are living a life of poverty. These small towns can surely take an example from Betkuchi and look towards a better future.

Good leaders increase employee engagement, support a positive environment and help remove obstacles for their team. Good leadership is also contagious, inspiring colleagues to apply positive leadership traits in their own work.

Let’s talk about some of the must-have leadership skills that may prove valuable to your career.

1. Decisiveness: Effective leaders are those who can make decisions quickly with the information they have. Effective decision-making comes with time and experience. As you become more familiar with your specific industry, you will be able to make decisions faster, even when you don’t have all of the necessary information. Robotics Process Automation (RPA) – A hype or a reality?

The debate that robots are on the verge of making humans redundant in workplace has been gaining momentum in the recent years. There are many reports and academic papers written by experts on the impact robots are having in our lives as well as how administrative jobs will be taken over by them. However, the question remains: Is Robotics Process Automation (RPA) a reality or just a mere hype?

According to experts, RPA has advanced significantly over the years but there is no cause of worry as of now. Robots though decrease the need for repetitive human efforts, still have limitations to the types of work in which they can be applied.

RPA can help companies that use labour on a large scale for general knowledge process work. It will boost their capabilities and save money and time as robots provides dramatic improvements in accuracy and cycle time. For example automated processes in IT infrastructures can consistently investigate and solve problems for faster process throughput. RPA can improve service desk operations and the monitoring of network devices. Separating scalability from human resources helps a company to handle short-term demand without extra recruiting or training.

However, to say that robots will make humans redundant is still a distant reality. Humans, as yet, don’t need to pack up their desk and hand over to computers. In fact jobs in places like education, healthcare, arts and media are likely to remain in demand from humans. These jobs are difficult to be computerized as these require a certain level of social and emotional intelligence as well as creativity. It is one thing getting a face recognised incorrectly in an image uploaded to Facebook, but a totally different matter if cancer is misdiagnosed by an Artificial intelligence. After all, just as humans, computers make mistakes too.

Why a website is important for the business?

In today’s world, where one cannot exit the realm of digital world -a website- however big or small, is a necessity. Be it from the perspective of building a reputation of the company, or implementing a marketing and sales strategy, a company will lose huge opportunities if it does not have a digital presence in the form of a website. A website provides a company a far wider and cheaper reach to its customers than any form of other marketing and advertising tools. Company’s websites usually provide reviews and feedback for customers, builds trust and better relationships, increase customer base and most importantly influences a buyer’s decision to own its product and services. Truly, with a website a company can do anything or go anywhere it wants. The whole world can be its stage.

Here we list down six reasons why a website should be an integral part of any organisation:

1) Cost Effective: Every company looks for ways to save money in their advertising budget and marketing strategies. Having a company’s website is one of the most effective ways to cut down on the publicity expenses. A potential customer can reach out directly on the website, have up-to-date information about its products and services and get instant updates about the company. For example, if there is any change in a company’s product or in the organisational structure, updates can be instant and saves the cost of printing material like leaflets and pamphlets or expensive advertisements in newspapers and billboards. Demo videos can be provided on a website for the products and printed materials can be made available for instant download through the website.

 2)  Gives visibility: Another important reason to design a website is to have ownership and give visibility to the company. People might have heard about the company, but if they want to know more about the product and the services it offers, the first thing they do is research online.  Even if people have heard about the company, they might want more information to get the best from the product. People want to make sure that they are utilizing their time and money in the right way before entertaining the idea of leaving the comfort of their homes. A well-designed website, therefore, gives more visibility to the company and its products and help buyers make informed decisions.

3) Helps to build reputation: Credibility is another factor that helps to build a company’s reputation. A website which talk about its product, has reviews of customers on its site can go a long way to establish a brand reputation and trust. If  a company does not have a website that people can refer to and/or rely on user’s feedback to check about their products online, chances are that the customers are going to assume that it is a small company and does not take its product seriously.

4) Accessibility to products 24*7: A website is like having an “efficient employee” who works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. This "employee" is available from anywhere in the world and can serve multiple places and people, delivering the same exact information every time. For example, any individual who has made up his mind to buy a particular service or product from a company does not have to wait for the official working hours of the company but can rather have information in an instant from anywhere in the world and buy its service or product almost immediately.

5)  Wider audience reach:  With the easy accessibility of a mobile phone and internet, a company’s business can reach to a wider geographic area. By getting a website it makes it possible for anyone in the world to find information about the service and products from anywhere in the world. If the company owns a product that can be sold online it can dramatically increase the customer base all over the world. Taking the business online allows a company to diversify markets.

 6)  Improves customers experience:  One of the most determining factors that makes a buyer decide to invest in a company’s product and services is the experience he will have while deciding on the product and a website can make a huge different to that. Website, through its instant messaging or feedback form can targets each visitor individually and caters to its needs exclusively. For example, if a potential buyer has a specify question about the company’s product and service, he can get instant feedback and advice through the services offered from the website. However, the buyer’s journey does not stop after purchasing a product. After-sale service goes a long way in determining to have a lasting impression about the company and here too the portal can play a huge role. If the company provide information or support through the portal that makes them happier, it strengthens the business of the organisation.

Yes, eating potatoes will NOT make you fat!!!

How many times have you heard that you should avoid potatoes if you are on a diet?   The little innocent thing has earned such a bad reputation as “unhealthy and fatty food “ that dieters run away simply by the mention of its name. But do you know that potatoes are a recommended diet food, especially for those who lack essential vitamins and fibre in their body?

The potato isn’t inherently bad and it shouldn’t be treated as such. However, when the potato is smothered in cheese, mashed with mayo and doused in sour cream or is deep-fried, it loses its inherent properties.  Boom News lists six reasons why you should love potatoes and eat it too!

Good for people with high blood pressure:  The skin of the potato is loaded with potassium, which plays a crucial role in lowering blood pressure. One large spud baked with the skin on contains at least 1,600 milligrams of potassium, nearly half the recommended amount for an entire day and almost four times as much as a medium banana. Potato also serves as an essential electrolyte key to hydration and athletic performance.

Potatoes are a good source of vitamin C: Think of vitamin C, think of potatoes! Do you know that one medium sized potato has 45% of your daily requirement of vitamin C? Not only is vitamin C essential to boost your immune system, studies also show that having adequate amounts of vitamin C can keep stress levels down by stopping the secretion of stress hormones.

Potatoes contain fibre. The skin of the potatoes is the healthiest for its fibre content. Fibre aids in weight-loss, keeps your heart healthy and improves digestion. Eating a potato with its skin can be a good way to put more fibre into your diet. To get more health benefits from the skin, try topping it with broccoli and salsa.

7 Hidden Costs Airlines Will Never Tell You

You must have surely noticed the on-going “special schemes” offered by various airline companies these days. How many times have you planned to book your tickets and stopped at the pay button only because there is a huge difference between the offer price and the final price that you are likely to pay?

Sometimes, these “offers” can be so expensive that it might surpass the usual cost you would otherwise pay if you are travelling without these special frills. Ticket prices that initially looked good rapidly rise once an array of extra expenses is clubbed into the equation. Here listing you some of these hidden costs that are always written on that fine print that the travellers should not miss.

Taxes, charges and fees: Very recently, a popular Indian airline company offered tickets at Rs 100 as part of their anniversary deal to fly anywhere within the country. But when this blogger did some research on their site, the cost from Mumbai to Delhi, one of the most popular destinations in India, comes to about Rs 4,300 as the company levied charges like fuel charges, insurance etc.  Another very popular budget airline also offered to give away tickets at Rs 600 to fly to various destinations within India. However, when putting the same parameters into consideration as we did above, the cost from Delhi to Mumbai came to about Rs 3,800. Not to mention, these special discounts get reduced when the travelling distance gets increased. A one-way ticket from Delhi to Chennai costs Rs 6,200. (Does not look so special any more right?)

Popular destinations:  How many times have you chosen a destination that is not so popular and found out that these schemes and offers are not included in these sectors? For example, when we wanted to book a ticket from Mumbai to Guwahati, the gateway to North East, these special offers are beyond these sectors. A one-way ticket for the same sector costs Rs 2,300 as base fare. After adding fuel charges and taxes, the fare amounted to over Rs 6,000, and trust us, we have not even tried to go and check in the extra luggage.

Luggage: One of the main reasons for the traveller paying extra is hidden in their luggage. As per aviation guidelines, the maximum weight to carry in any Indian airlines is 15 kilos per person. Various airlines charge different amounts for extra baggage that can range from Rs 150 to Rs 400 per kilo.
